The Philosophy Department at Rhodes College hosts a debate between philosophy scholars Dr. Amy Wendling of Creighton University and Dr. Farhang Erfani of American University. The question debated is "Does Democracy Matter?" Event takes place in Blount Auditorium of Buckman Hall at Rhodes College.
Wendling's expertise includes political philosophy, ethics, and social theory, and she engages students in substantive questions that form the basis for their ethical and political judgments. Her first book, Karl Marx on Technology and Alienation, is due for publication in 2009.
Erfani's research is focused on political philosophy, continental philosophy and aesthetics, and at American University he has taught the "Theories of Democracy and Human Rights" course. He currently is finishing a book on Jean-Paul Sartre and Paul Ricoeur titled Aesthetics of Autonomy.
The debate is co-sponsored by Rhodes' History and Religious Studies departments as well as the Search for Values in the Light of Western History and Religion Program.
