A day of activities and a panel discussion to honor Memphis history. Runs in conjunction with the exhibition "Photographs from the Memphis World, 1949-1964."
Adults and children alike will enjoy a day of hands-on art activities, exploring the Memphis World exhibition with interactive gallery guides, and having their pictures made in a photo booth. The Memphis Youth Performing Arts Company will also be performing throughout the day.
The Community Day also marks the opening of Memphis 08.16.08, an exhibition of photographs submitted by the community representing “A Day in the Life of Memphis.”
At 2 p.m., a Panel Discussion exploring Memphis history through the historic photographs from the Memphis World, 1949-1964 exhibition. Panelists will include:
Miriam DeCosta Willis, Civil Rights Movement leader and author of the recent book Notable Black Memphians.
Earnestine Jenkins, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Memphis and specialist in African American photography of the American south.
Joseph Nelson, nephew of photographer R. Earl Williams, whose photographs appeared in the Memphis World. His father was the manager of Foote Homes, which appears in a number of the World photographs.
The Memphis World Community Day is free to the entire community.
