RIVERBLUFF CLAN. Merry Christmas from Otherlands. We are bringing you a rare evening with Memphis country/rock/bluegrass phenoms, The Riverbluff Clan. It's gonna be a barn burner and all for just $10 of your stocking money. Starts at eight, so don't be late.
Originally formed in the mid-1970s, The Riverbluff Clan established themselves as one of the most prominent bands in Memphis, both as a local favorite and international touring act. After a long run, the band dissolved to pursue solo interests.
Reforming in 1996 with the addition of one new member, Jimmy Davis, and original members Tommy Burroughs, Richard Ford, Harry Peel and Tony Sneed, the band plays many styles and can just as easily slide into a Bill Monroe tune as something by Gram Parsons.
Their reformation resulted in two recordings in 1996. They appeared on the Memphis compilation of Memphis: Ain't Like It Used to Be and contributed the tune, "Making Me Old." They also released their only live project, One Night in a Month of Sundays, recorded at the World Famous Poplar Lounge.
Performing to rave reviews, the band took to the road in 1998 and opened for Mark Collie. They also released their second CD, Two Quarts Low, on the newly formed Fat Chance Records.
The live album One Night in a Month of Sundays was heralded for its "hybrid vigor," while the studio CD Two Quarts Low was called a "genre-bending romp through bluegrass, country and country-tinged rock". It garnered a top 20 spot on the Gavin Americana chart. The Clan also appeared in the The Poor & Hungry, directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow), performing Davis' "Honeysuckle and Kudzu."
In both 1997 and 1998 the Memphis Chapter of NARAS (The Grammys) named them the Premier Band of the Year while singer Jimmy Davis was awarded the honors for Premier Male Vocalist in 1998. Tommy Burroughs won the title of Premier Strings Player three times, and Richard Ford has been a Premier Player five times in multiple categories.
