"Voices of a New South"

Description: The Dixon Gallery and Gardens presents a group exhibition of local artists whose art examines life in the modern South. On view in the Mallory and Wurtzburger Galleries from Sept. 13 through Nov. 29, 2009, artists NJ Woods, Anthony Lee, Kiersten Williams, and Twin use their collective folk and pop art influences to look toward the future while embracing the past with emotional intensity and honesty.

Each Voices of a New South artist uses cultural themes from Memphis and the South to tell a personal story. Anthony Lee’s mixed media works function as emotional vignettes, while identical twin brothers Jerry and Terry Lynn simultaneously create their paintings and bring a deep familial connection to the canvas. Kiersten Williams’ paintings explore relationships with people and circumstance through complex yet arresting images. Entirely self-taught, NJ Woods’ richly colored paintings arise from memories of her upbringing in the Deep South and speak to the inner child in everyone.

The Voices of a New South opening will be held Thursday, September 17, 2009, at the Dixon’s Art After Dark program from 6-9 pm. Attendees will have a chance to meet and greet the artists, listen to live music by Memphis jazz singer Valencia Robinson, and enjoy a cash bar, all for regular Dixon admission.
