When: Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: The Children’s Museum of Memphis, 2525 Central, Memphis

Cost: $10

Age limit: All ages

Description: Long before the Mid-South was populated by cows and cotton fields, dinosaurs roamed the land. A new traveling exhibit allows children and adults to explore dinosaur habitats to better understand how these mysterious animals lived and use inquiry skills to examine what they left behind.

"Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice" transports families back to the Cretaceous Period (145-65 million years ago), the time when dinosaurs last lived on earth.

Children go face-to-face with the prehistoric world and meet dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes. A Field Research Station allows children to step into the role of paleontologist by uncovering fossils with brushes and creating drawings of the dinosaur environment using fossil rubbings and tracings. The steamy “Land of Fire” connects visitors with the prehistoric home of the Triceratops and T-Rex. Children can circle the land in insect costumes and buzz through a volcano with oozing lava. They also work through a swampy bog and identify an ecosystem of animals and plants. No coats are needed for a trip across the “Land of Ice” where visitors meet two dinosaurs, a Troodon and Edmontosaurus, who made their homes in the cold climate of Alaska. Activities include: climbing rocky steps, breezing down an icy slide, and hopping across stepping stones in an icy river.

The exhibit utilizes new research about climates in which dinosaurs were able to survive and thrive. The discovery of numerous species of dinosaurs in the arctic is causing scientists to reconsider old theories about dinosaurs only living in tropical climates. It is now known that many dinosaurs, including Edmontosaurus and Troodon, lived in cold weather climates for at least part of the year.

Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice is the first child-centered exhibit in the country dedicated to expanding the understanding of dinosaur habitat and range. It was created by Minnesota Children’s Museum and is sponsored locally by Kronos Energy Solutions.

Location:
2525 Central Avenue.

Hours:
Open 7 Days a Week 9am-5pm.

Admission:
$10 ages 1-100 and free for museum members and children under one (NOTE: A special $2 surcharge applies Feb. 11-May 13 during the Dinosaur exhibit).

Information:
(901) 458-2678.

When: Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: Memphis Pink Palace Museum & Planetarium, 3050 Central Ave., Memphis

Cost: $6.25 - $9.75

Age limit: All ages

Description: Exhibition opens Jan. 28, 2012, and runs through May 25, 2012

A symbol of our shared past, the North American bison is a special
animal. Painted on tipis or canvases hung in museums, minted on nickels, or breathing plumes of steam on a frosty morning in Shelby Farms Park, few animals conjure such deep loyalties to the North American wilderness as the mighty bison.

The Bison: American Icon, a new exhibition opening January 28 at the Pink Palace Museum, explores the history and science of these iconic creatures from their role in the Plains Indian culture of the 19th century to
their status as a national symbol of the present. Along the way, The Bison charts the changes forced upon these animals, taking them to the very brink of extinction and back into our parks, our wilderness and our modern
lives.

The exhibit opens with a primary mystery; until the 1860s, there were tens of millions of bison roaming the plains of North America. By 1890, there were fewer than 300. So, what happened? The Bison examines this
question, before and after the bison’s shockingly rapid decline, and tells the story of how this important animal’s extinction was ultimately averted by conservationists.

Originally developed by the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana, and co-curated by Anne Morand and Dr. Lynn Spriggs, the Pink Palace exhibits staff has added extra artifacts. The Field Museum in Chicago
and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology have loaned the Pink Palace more than 30 Plains Indians artifacts, chosen to compliment the story told by The Bison. With these additions, The Bison: American Icon will be the largest traveling exhibit of Plains Indian bison culture ever shown in the Mid-South.

The Bison: American Icon is on exhibit at the Pink Palace Museum January 28 through May 25, 2012.

Tickets are $9.75 – adults, $9.25 – seniors, $6.25 – children (3-12). Group rates are available.

For information/reservations, call (901) 636-2362. http://www.memphismuseums.org.
Pink Palace Museum, 3050 Central Avenue, Memphis, TN 38111
