Millington is located 20 miles north of Memphis. It is the home to the Naval Support Activity Mid-South naval base, which employs 6000 people, making it one of the largest employers in Tennessee . Millington is also the home of the Memphis Motorsports Park and USA Stadium.
Every fall, Millington hosts the annual International Goat Days festival. The weekend-long festival includes games, goats and an anvil shooting contest. The Memphis Stunt Classic radio-controlled airplane event is also held in Millington.
Millington was founded in 1878 when a north Shelby County landowner offered to donate land for a new town and railroad station. The towns of Glencoe and Milwood combined to form Millington. Soon the town expanded and developed water and light systems, bus service, its own telephone company, a local newspaper and annual community celebrations.
