South Memphis is one of the oldest sections of Memphis and features several important music history landmarks. Stax Records , a soul, funk and blues label which released records by Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and Booker T. and the MG’s is located in South Memphis. Thousands of visitors flock to Elvis Presley’s home, Graceland, every year to tour the home and pay homage to the king of rock’n’roll.
South Memphis includes Orange Mound, the first African American neighborhood in the United States to be built by African Americans. Orange Mound was developed in the 1890s on the site of the John Deaderick plantation. Churches have always played a prominent role in the life of South Memphis, helping to develop community leaders and fostering community stability.
