Best bets: Pizza plain

School starts on Monday and face it: You're going to be eating pizza more than you want to admit. But don't worry: There are so many favorite pizza places around town that we've got two Best Bets columns devoted to the beloved pie. This week, call it Pizza Plain. Next week, we'll go with Pizza Fancy. Quotations are from bloggers on whiningdining.com.

Broadway Pizza (2581 Broad, 454-7930) is a favorite "hole in the wall" that "looks like it did when Elvis ate there." Go for "the junky, piled-high topping kind o' pie," say bloggers. We say it's pizza-licious.

In the 2007 "Memphis Most" survey, readers voted Pizza Cafe as having the "Most Savory Slice of Pizza."

Milano's(1740 N. Germantown Parkway, No. 17, 753-7017; 7625 Hwy. 64, 380-7800; 3705 Malco Way, No. 102, 751-0430) is the "closest we've found to the those wonderful pizzas we savored in Venice." Perfect for "when you want something simple and slightly greasy and delicious."

Little Italy (1495 Union, 725-0280) has a stuffed pizza that's "amazing and so packed that one slice can be a meal," and the "New York- style cheese slice wins hands-down." Another blogger agrees, saying it's "about as close to New York as you can get without a plane ticket."

Jimmy's (6773 Stage Road, 386-1644) serves a fine Chicago-style hot dog but folks are increasingly heading there for the pizza. People who liked Jimmy's said the "thin-crust Chicago Style is excellent," and "I moved from Chicago so I am partial to the deep dish." Just do not ask for ketchup on your hot dog.

Coletta's (1063 S. Parkway East, 948-7652; 2840 Appling, 383-1122) ), so the story goes, started serving barbecue pizza because back in the day, barbecue was familiar to Memphians and pizza wasn't. It's still a favorite, from the pizza to the atmosphere at the South Parkway location: "Sit at the bar and you're in 'The Godfather,' sit in the Star room and you're in a Sinatra film."
