Best Bets: Pizza for grownups

Last week we brought you five best bets for plain pizza. This week, it’s pizza for grown-ups (and discriminating children; we don’t want to forget about them). Go get you a slice. Mmm, pizza...

* At Boscos Squared (2120 Madison, 432-2222) you can try a different wood-fired, thin-crust gourmet pizza each time you go, or you can be like me and just order the California (because it’s divine). Another plus and the best thing is that you can also order up a pint or two of Boscos’ locally brewed beers.

Specializing in gourmet pizza, Lou's Pizza Pie offers combinations such such as this half Moon Pie, half Bluto's Revenge.

* Memphis Pizza Cafe (multiple locations, go to memphispizzacafe.com to find one near you) has something for everyone. Adults can load up on artichoke hearts and anchovies and kids can pile on the pepperoni. Someone will even choose the pineapple — there’s always one — but I have to declare: Pineapple does not belong on pizza!

* The folks at Old Venice (368 Perkins Ext., 767-6872) will serve you a manly John Wayne or Mighty Meaty pizza, but it’s hard for me to resist the Mardi Gras or the Banscueccio when I want one of these puffy pizzas.

* Lou at Lou’s Pizza Pie (2158 Young, 722-4031) must be one of the friendliest people in town — never-met-a-stranger kind of guy — but he sure makes a mean pizza. Stick with the cosmos (the moon pie, sun pie and star pie) and you’ll go home happy. But really, they’re all good. Even the PMS.

* Think Brooklyn Bridge (1779 Kirby Parkway, Suite 5, Germantown, 755-7413) and you usually think pasta, so think again. There are fine pies to be had at Carrefour and on Monday nights you save $5 on a large.

* Special shout-outs to Pete & Sam’s (3886 Park, 458-0694) ’cause we do love their pizzas, and to Lucchesi’s take-and-bake pizza. Pick one up at 540 S. Mendenhall Road, Suite 3 (766-9922) or 2050 W. Poplar in Collierville (861-6666).
