"Guitar licks" for Jeff Cannon means slapping paint on the 10-foot Fiberglass Gibson guitar he's making for Hard Rock Cafe's New Year's Eve Guitar Drop.

Revelers can count down the New Year as the Gibson guitar is suspended from a crane and lowered over Beale Street.

Hard Rock also will feature live performances by local Memphis rockers Whiskey Penny, Surrender the Fall, ES-335 player Dennis Coffey and DJ Mic Tee of the "Franchise Mix Show."

A native Memphian, Cannon is the son of Memphis singer-songwriter Jim Cannon. Jeff donated auction items for the Blues Ball, The Orpheum and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

"As a local artist, I enjoy supporting Memphis," Jeff said. "Creating a guitar for Gibson and the Hard Rock would exemplify the combination of both influences -- Memphis music and art."

Whiskey Penny guitarists Nathan Evans and Steve Hatmaker will be playing conventionally sized Gibson Les Paul guitars.

"It's a come-back show," said drummer Dustin Carr. "We've got two new members, a bunch of new music. We went into the studio. We're just coming back coming back better and better."

The New Year's Eve Guitar Drop begins at 10 p.m. at the Hard Rock at 315 Beale. Tickets are $20 (ages 21 and older welcome).
