Party Line: Back to the Eighties

Red Carpet Bash picks up on a retro theme

The 1980s was the theme of the eighth annual Hollywood Casino St. Jude Red Carpet Bash Saturday night at Hollywood Casino, so big hair was a big part of many outfits.

Describing his bushy, curly wig, Frank York said, "I'm the guy they kicked out of White Snake before they made it big."

Will Hutchins, who wore an oversized curly wig, portrayed Slash from Guns 'N' Roses.

The members of Dr. Zarr's Amazing Funk Monster played their first set in tuxedos instead of their usual shaggy wigs and retro rock star costumes. They returned for the second set in Spandex and packed the dance floor as they played '80s songs.

"Dance to the Beat and Help Kids on their Feet" was the theme of this year's party. Shawn and Lana Danko were chairmen of the event, which included live and silent auctions, a buffet dinner and music by DJ Tree. Brad Carson and Jill Bucco were the emcees.

Event grows over 19 years

George Alvord remembered the first time celebrities were waiters at what is now the Chefs' Celebrity Gala, a benefit for the Memphis Child Advocacy Center dinner

About 100 people attended and 10 people served as waiters at that event 19 years ago, said George, who is chairman and chief executive officer of Lenny's Sub Shop.

He estimated about 1,000 attended this year's event, which was Thursday night at the Hilton Memphis. George's son, Brent Alvord, president of Lenny's, was among almost 100 celebrity waiters.

The celebrity waiters did their best to keep from spilling wine and dropping dishes as they served the five-course meal that included Kentucky steak roulade stuffed with Smithfield ham.

This year's event, which included live and silent auctions, was dedicated to Carol Prentiss and her late husband, Jim Prentiss, longtime chairmen of the event.

The Jim Johnson Orchestra performed.

Going glam for one evening

People were back in costume a week after Halloween for "Party Like a Rock Star" Friday night at Earnestine & Hazel's.

The Grand Krewe of Ptolemy for Carnival Memphis hosted the party, which featured Jell-O shots, an ice luge and a karaoke contest.

Sam Buckmaster and Erin McGill created a musical duo: he dressed as Kid Rock and she portrayed a member of the Bangles.
