What do you eat at 3 a.m. when you’re bar hopping Downtown? You get a Soul Burger at Earnestine & Hazel’s at 531 South Main. Michael Donahue’s After Dark takes a look and a few bites of the burger that’s become legendary among night clubbers.
Owner Russell George named the hamburger in honor of the soul singers who frequented Earnestine & Hazel’s back in the day. The recipe is a secret, but late night partiers don’t care as long as there are plenty on hand when they’re dancing to some of those soul singers on the juke box downstairs or listening to someone play the piano upstairs in the circa 1915 building that once housed a pharmacy and a brothel and, apparently, still houses a ghost.
