Subtitled "Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder" (now available in paperback from Algonquin, $14.95), the book is a manifesto for the reintroduction of nature into the lives of contemporary children who, for a variety of reasons -- fear, indifference, extracurricular activities, cultural attitudes, media saturation -- live outside the realm of nature's beneficence.

Louv, the author of seven books, won the 2008 Audubon Medal. He is chairman of the Children & Nature Network. For more information, visit lastchildinthewoods.com.

This year’s “Conservation through Art” conference begins Sunday with Family Day at Shelby Farms from 2 to 5 p.m. Activities include fishing, decoy painting, outdoor conservation games, working-dog demonstrations, duck-calling lessons and an outdoor performance by Voices of the South. The event, organized by ArtsMemphis and Ducks Unlimited, is free.

"Conservation through Art" is a project of ArtsMemphis and Ducks Unlimited.

Mysterious Davis-Kidd

Three authors of mystery novels will visit Davis-Kidd Booksellers this week.

Margo Miller, who wrote about opera, ballet, classical music and theater for the Boston Globe from 1962 to 1999, turns her knowledge to fiction in "Murdering Tosca: An Opera 'Shocker'" (PublishAmerica, $21.95). She will be at Davis-Kidd Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Wednesday at 6 p.m., Davis-Kidd will welcome former Memphian and 1992 Rhodes College graduate Mary Gordon Kerr, who will sign her adventure-fantasy-pirate treasure novel, "The Mystery of the 13th Coin" (High Tide Publishing, $14.99), set on the South Carolina coast where the author lives with her family.

Memphian Jimmy Gillentine will be at Davis-Kidd Saturday at 1 p.m. to sign his thriller "Of Blood and the Moon" (Blu Phi'er Publishing. $14.99).

Davis-Kidd is at 387 Perkins Ext. in Laurelwood. Call 683-9801.

Event benefits St. Jude

"Novels of Hope," a series launched by Arabesque Books, will bring two authors and a publisher to the Danny Thomas Pavilion at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Wednesday at 4 p.m. Arabesque, an imprint of the well-known Harlequin Books, publisher of romance novels, focuses on the black urban professional audience. The first two entries in the "Novels of Hope" series -- "For All We Know" by Sandra Kitt and "What Matters Most" by Gwynne Forster (each $6.99) -- besides the usual structure of attraction and love, offer glimpses into the struggles of children battling pediatric HIV and sickle cell disease. Kitt and Forster will sign books at the event, and Arabesque general manager Linda Gill will present a donation to the hospital from the publisher.

The event is free and open to the public.
