"Color Play: Exploring the Art & Science of Color" continues through Jan. 4 at the Children’s Museum of Memphis.
From the colorful sports jerseys that hang on a panel of lockers to the attention-grabbing vehicles parked on the museum floor, the exhibition space at the Children’s Museum of Memphis is awash in primary hues.
The decoration perfectly suits “Color Play: Exploring the Art & Science of Color,” a traveling exhibit on display through Jan. 4.
On a recent weekday afternoon, 6-year-old Sam Lopez and his 4-year-old brother Neal, visitors from Kenner, La., were drawn to the interactive parts of the show.
Sam played with the “color storm” of dyed feathers that blew into the air when he used his hands to crank the pedals of an upside-down bike, while Neal lingered in the three-room Color Playhouse, browsing through books beneath the white chandelier in the Rainbow Room before building a tower of blocks using his favorite color, purple.
The show is a mix of science experiments and creative exploration.
“Kids of all ages are having fun with this exhibit, although components of it will appeal more to older children who are into art and science,” said Randy McKeel, CMOM marketing director.
Exhibit details, such as the Stroop Test, a brain imaging test devised in 1935, and the Prism’s Rainbow, which mimics an experiment conducted by Sir Isaac Newton in 1665, are for will certainly engage more mature audiences.
One hands-on exhibit is built from a TV set, a camera and an oversized magnifier, and separates pixels into the colors red, green and blue, for a graphic “Pigment Palette” display.
But children too young to understand fiber-optics or the subtleties of color blending will find excitement in the interactive “Neon Swirl,” the oversized “Big Kaleidoscope,” the “Color Mixer” and the “Color Creations” light board, where kids can rearrange plastic triangles and squares to create temporary stained glass-like portraits.
Cori Carnes, 3, and her brother Daniel, 5, who live in Parkway Village, liked the “Soap Bubble Window,” a do-it-yourself 2-foot square of film-thin purple, gold and green soap. Neither cared much about the hows and whys of the color combination — yet they were absorbed in concentration as a passerby raised the window, which they would then pop with their fingers.
“They’re never too young to learn,” said their mother, Danyelle Carnes, who says her family visits CMOM at least twice a month.
