Party Line: Wine, roses & Scarlatti

Lines delivered on stage Saturday night at Germantown Performing Arts Centre probably included, "This chocolate decadence with fresh raspberries and warm Godiva chocolate is wonderful!" or "What did you think of the Scarlatti?"

Dinner was served on stage to guests at GPAC's "A Night of Wine & Roses" fundraiser. Before dinner, they gathered for hors d'oeuvres and a silent auction in the lobby. They then entered the theater for a performance by pianist Pnina Becher of selections from "Piano Reserva -- a Scarlatti Soiree" on GPAC's new Steinway concert grand, a live auction conducted by Jeff Morris and dinner on tables decorated with candelabras festooned with roses. Dinner was by Harrah's Entertainment chefs Bryant McClore and Steve Pairolero.

A 'good time' at the ball

"I'm a cancer survivor, so I'm here," said Knox Phillips at the recent Zodiac Ball at The Peabody.

Knox and Diane Duncan were among the guests at the fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

"A Swinging Good Time!" was the theme of the event chaired by Tracey Witchko and Holland Tudor.

Special guest Abby Jones spoke on Camp Horizon, the American Cancer Society's summer camp outside Nashville.

Dr. Thomas Chesney, a specialist in the diagnosis and staging of cancer, was this year's Zodiac Ball honoree.

The Cherry Poppin' Daddies performed.

Hands of Hope

Andre Wharton and his wife, Monica, filled in for Shelby County Mayor A C and Ruby Wharton as honorary chairmen at this year's Hands of Hope Auction Party.

The recent event at Memphis Botanic Garden benefited the Exchange Club Family Center.

The Whartons were in Boston, where Ruby was accepting a lifetime achievement award from Boston College School of Law, said Karen Johnston, who chaired the event with her husband, Kirk. Karen also is president of the board of directors of Exchange Club of Memphis.

In addition to live and silent auctions, the evening included dancing to music by Breeze Cayolle and the French Quarter All-Stars.
