‘Teenage Tupelo’ comes home
“There’s more to Tupelo than Elvis and gum trees.”
That’s the slogan for the inaugural Tupelo Underground Film Festival, to be held today at Good Time Charlie’s, a restaurant/bar at 2901 Eason Blvd. in Tupelo, Miss.
The event will be highlighted by the first public Tupelo screening of what may be Mississippi-born, Memphis-based moviemaker John Michael McCarthy’s most personal feature, “Teenage Tupelo” (1995), in which a poor young flower of the Magnolia State is impregnated by a has-been rockabilly singer; the girl overcomes her problems with the help of a man-hating gang of female rebels and a nudie-film star.
“Teenage Tupelo” tentatively is slated to screen at 9:30 p.m.
The festival lineup also includes the recent features “Visioneers” (7:30 p.m.) a satire set in an Orwellian America of the near future, which stars Zach Galifianakis (“The Hangover”); and the Mississippi-made “In a Trice” (5 p.m.), directed by Glenn and Derek Payne. Shorts and music videos (including one for the song “H.P. Lovecraft” by Cockfight Club) will accompany the features.
In addition, the work of North Mississippi “underground” artists will be on display in the restaurant’s gallery.
Admission to the festival, slated to begin at 5 p.m., is $5 for the evening. For more information, visit .
