Red West (with Souléymane Sy Savané) has his first lead role in "Goodbye Solo."
"Goodbye Solo," the acclaimed independent feature film that gave former Elvis associate Red West the first lead role of his long acting career, arrives Tuesday on DVD from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.
West, 73, an original member of the so-called "Memphis Mafia" who befriended Elvis Presley in high school, earned rave reviews for his performance as a mysterious old-timer in North Carolina who hires a Senegalese cab driver named Solo (Souléymane Sy Savané) to take him on what appears to be a suicide ride.
Directed by Ramin Bahrani, "Goodbye Solo" made its debut last fall at the London, Venice and Toronto film festivals, and opened in the U.S. earlier this year to almost universal praise. A.O. Scott in The New York Times called it "an almost perfect film," and Roger Ebert awarded it four stars, and called it "a masterwork."
West, who now lives in Biloxi, Miss., introduced the film on its opening night in Memphis on May 15 at Malco's Ridgeway Four. He next will be seen onscreen in "Father of Invention" with Kevin Spacey, Virginia Madsen and Heather Graham.
Kiddie cash
Malco Theatres Inc. earned more than $35,000 for charity with its annual "Kids Summer Film Fest" programming.
The 10 a.m. screenings of family-friendly films were held Tuesdays and Wednesdays in June and July at selected Malco theaters in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi.
The schedule included such films as "Kung Fu Panda" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks," and tickets were only $2 each.
The money will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson, Miss., the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt and the Oxford, Miss., food bank, The Pantry.
