Who'da thunk it? Bacon-wrapped bananas. More to the point, why would I actually order it? Well, I did it once and I'll do it again.
We as a nation have been putting bacon in and on everything possible these days, so why not wrap a bit around a banana?
I dashed into Automatic Slim's for a Popsicle martini -- more accurately, a mojito in a martini glass with a delightful cinnamon stick wrapped in sweetened ice -- and was intrigued by the bananas. It was just $5, so there wasn't much at stake.
Strips of bacon are wrapped around small pieces of bananas and the whole shebang is fried. Topped with a Creole mustard sauce, it's sweet and salty, savory and tart, and a fine companion to that mojito (which is also $5 during happy hour, which runs from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. daily).
