Memphians may not have a good old-fashioned Weihnachtsmarkt, or Christmas market, to attend, but plenty of holiday art markets and shows that begin this weekend help spark the festive feeling locally.
The offerings are diverse -- from fine art to quaint crafts -- with an added incentive this year for the dollar-conscious shopper. Says T Clifton Art business manager Pat Brown in a sentiment mirrored by other gallery owners: "For the most part, the artists have really tailored items for gift-giving that will work with all budgets."

The platter is by Joan Kelly and the background scarf and woven flower pins and barrette by Angela Schneider, artists whose work will be for sale at the Holiday Open House in the Evergreen Historic District this weekend.

The first annual Broad Avenue Holiday Art Walk is tonight 6-9 p.m. in the many galleries and businesses that populate the growing arts district (located at Sam Cooper and Broad between Hollywood and Collins). An outgrowth of their fall art walk, highlights include "Blues on Broad," a series of 15 paintings by George Hunt at West Memorial, 2481 Broad, with music by Darren J and Blackkat Bone; a special exhibit/presentation at Weaver & Associates, 2563 Broad, by Junkyard Museum founder Lisa Williamson, who will discuss aspects of the interactive, found-object art museum including its summer camp and Broad Ave. relocation plans (music by percussionist Donald Knaack -- The Junkman); a Memphis Area Women's Council exhibit of T-shirt art by local domestic violence survivors Splash Creative, 2574 Sam Cooper; and a floating "fa la la" installation at Odessa, 2613 Broad, in which the artwork will hang from the ceiling like snowflakes. Paintings, hewn bowls, fashion accessories, and more can be found in the fifth annual Holiday Open House in the Evergreen Historic District noon-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Woodturner Joan Kelly and textile artist Angela Schneider will operate from 1750 Forrest while artist Martha Kelly and woodworker Elmore Holmes will be at 1780 Autumn. Says Joan Kelly, "It's certainly a sale, but it's also a chance to meet our neighbors, and for people who know us in other contexts to come see what we do." The Memphis Arts Collective holds its 4th annual Holiday Artist Market through Dec. 24 at 1501 Union (formerly B.A. Framer), where pottery, paintings, collectibles and more will be available from two dozen-plus vendors. Tonight's opening event 6-9 p.m. features complimentary refreshments and music by Jim Duckworth and Jim Spake. A silent auction will benefit Friends for Life. The National Ornamental Metal Museum, 374 Metal Museum Drive, hosts a Holiday Open House 3-5 p.m. Sunday that includes treats, carols by the Overton High School Chamber Choir, a "Holiday Showcase" of affordable jewelry, kitchen utensils, and metal art, and free entry to the current exhibit "Re-make/Re-model".
