Kevin Murphy, 16, considered taking part in the Comcast Firecracker 5K for St. Jude, a fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
But the 18-inch half-barbecue-half-Italian sausage Garibaldi's pizza he ate before Friday's race was a "factor" in not taking part, said Kevin, who runs cross country for Christian Brothers High School.
About 2,500 others did participate, said race founder Susan Hedgepeth. From the look of the crowd, most of them apparently attended the after party at the Racquet Club of Memphis. The Soul Shockers performed.
Runner Beau Lotz, whose time was 18 minutes and 42 seconds, has a tattoo on his right side that reads "Nie Befriedigt." "It's 'never satisfied' in German," he said. "You can always do better. Right?"
The Ogg family also were among the runners. They included Robert Ogg, 50, and his children Cameron, 21; Alec, 19; Thomas, 16; and Charlie, 11.
Susan Ogg and 2-year-old Hadrian Ogg were non-runners. "I had to hold the baby," Susan said.

For the kids
Instead of a golf club, PGA champ Shaun Micheel held a guitar and joined fellow guitarists Gerry Finney and Doug Petty on a rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama." They were at the recent Shaun Micheel Make-A-Wish Golf Classic pairings party at the Rendezvous.
His buddy, KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer, didn't attend this year's tournament because he's working on a new KISS album, Shaun said. KISS donated a signed Les Paul guitar, as well as tickets for a future show at FedEx Forum.
Tommy did call Shaun and was on speaker-phone before the live auction began, said Miranda Harbor with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-South.
"I wasn't able to attend this year due to my KISS schedule," Tommy told the guests. "I'm proud of what my bud Shaun is doing and his commitment to raising money for Make-A-Wish. As tradition now, KISS donates something big for the live auction each year."
Tommy also told guests that Shaun's golf event, including the pairings party, raised more than $200,000 this year for Make-A-Wish. "That's a lot of wishes for special kids. It's great to be involved."
'Happiness' unveiled
A summer tradition is the unveiling of the painting to be auctioned off at the Shelby Residential and Vocational Services Spirit of SRVS Auction Affair.
Connie Lampen was this year's guest artist. Her painting, "Wine, Music and Happiness," was unveiled at the recent Playhouse on the Square benefit for the organization. In addition to appetizers and a wine tasting, guests got a look at the painting before attending a matinee performance of "RENT." Connie's painting will be used as the commemorative poster for the Spirit of SRVS fundraiser Aug. 22 at the Hilton Memphis.
All in the pool
A dip in a swimming pool was a good thing on a day when temperatures are in the 90s.
Nick Rice recently hosted his annual pool party in East Memphis. The party, a fundraiser for the International Children's Heart Foundation, included a poolside bar serving Bacardi drinks and a battle of the bands featuring Double Shovel and Lackluster.
Nick and his fiancée, Rachel Gallant, kept the party running smoothly. Asked what time the party, which began at noon, ends, Nick said, "We bring the champagne out, everyone dances around the pool, the neighbors call the police and we stop when the police show up."
