Memphis filmmaker Morgan Jon Fox has been named one of "25 New Faces in Independent Film" in the latest issue of Filmmaker Magazine.

The magazine describes Fox as "the voice of the YouTube generation" for his interest in "teens, new media and sexual awakenings." It reports that his most recent digital video feature, "OMG/HaHaHa," which won a top award at the 2008 Indie Memphis Film Festival, "has struck a chord with young festivalgoers as well as critics," thanks to its "low-tech improvised/Web cam/quasi-documentary" style and its story about "gay, straight and transgender Memphis teens."

Emerging Pictures

The acclaimed documentary "Prom Night in Mississippi" gets its first national TV airing Monday at 8 p.m. on HBO.

"OMG/HaHaHa" will be released on DVD in September by Water Bearer Films.

Fox, 30, who has been a mentor to other young filmmakers through his Sawed-Off Collaboratory Production company and the old Memphis Digital Arts Co-operative, has been making highly personal, very low-budget films for the past decade. He was an assistant director on Craig Brewer's recent MTV project "$5 Cover," and he will be second assistant director on the upcoming made-in-Memphis MTV.com horror series, "Savage County."

Fox is the third Memphis filmmaker to make the magazine's "annual survey of new talent." Brewer made the list in 2002, on the strength of his debut feature, "The Poor & Hungry." In 2007, Kentucker Audley, director of the Sawed-Off production "Team Picture," was chosen.

The Summer 2008 issue of Filmmaker, with Quentin Tarantino on the cover, should reach newsstands next week. To read the magazine's story about Fox online, visit TheBloodshotEye.com.

Monster mash

Can you carry an ax as well as a tune? Are you a fan of song and dance and slaughter? Do you believe "Thriller" is the ultimate music video?

If so, the 11th Li'l Film Fest should give you something to scream about: "Musical Horror" is the promising theme for the fest, which will be held during the Indie Memphis Film Festival in October.

Organizers currently are seeking films for the Li'l Film Fest. The deadline for entries is Aug. 28.

Sponsored by Live From Memphis, the arts support-and-production collaborative, each quarterly Li'l Film Fest allows local filmmakers to showcase their talents with shorts that really are short: Entries must not exceed 5 minutes in length. Past Li'l Film Fests have focused on such topics as barbecue, Elvis and free speech.

The makers of the short that wins the "Grand Jury Award" will receive $500 in cash.

Make a date for 'Prom'

"Prom Night in Mississippi," the acclaimed documentary about the first racially integrated high-school senior prom in Charleston, Miss., makes its national TV debut at 8 p.m. Monday on HBO.

Directed by Paul Saltzman, the film takes an in-depth look at the preparations and controversy leading up to the prom, which was held April 19, 2008, after famous Charleston resident Morgan Freeman agreed to provide funding.

The movie made its debut this year at the Sundance Film Festival, and also screened at the 10th annual On Location: Memphis International Film Fest in April.

The film will be repeated multiple times in July and August on HBO and HBO2. For a full schedule, visit promnightinmississippi.com.
