Best bets: The Pancake Shop

I used to shy away from The Pancake Shop because in the old smoking days, you couldn't breathe in the place. I grumbled when my daughter talked me into going last week, but I was pleasantly surprised.

She wanted breakfast, but I was glad to find a retro diner selection on the reverse side of the menu. From a long list that included grilled cheese, a patty melt, burgers, salads and sides, I chose the ham club. Real ham (not deli sliced), crisp bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato came out tucked inside three slices of white toast with a big helping of old-fashioned crinkle fries on the side.

And the place was clean as a whistle, too. Not a whiff of smoke remained. Next time the kids are begging for chocolate chip pancakes for dinner, go along even if you don't want breakfast. There's plenty to choose from.
