Party Line: Canines on canvas

Mankind's best friend stars in 'A Dog's Life,' a fundraiser for the Humane Society

The dog days of spring are now through April 10. That's the run of "A Dog's Life," a new exhibit of paintings of canines at Memphis College of Art.

The show opened with a preview party Friday. Beth Edwards, curator of the show, which is a benefit for the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County, said, "I was interested in the history of how dogs are involved in paintings."

She wanted to "update it, see how contemporary artists are dealing with that subject."

Her dad, Larry Edwards, is one of the artists. Instead of cute little puppies, Larry opted to show mean dogs.

"I figured there's another side to the dog world other than that one you're always hearing about: 'What a sweet dog,' and 'a great dog,' " he said. "I've seen some mean dogs in my life."

Commenting on Larry's leg, which is in a brace, Dr. Richard Ranta said, "His leg is like that because of a dog."

It wasn't the animal's fault, Larry said.

"I was walking the dog three weeks ago and I tripped. I was walking it too fast, stepped up on a sidewalk, missed my footage, fell down, messed this knee up and broke this finger," he said.

Ptolemy coronation and anniversary

Ptolemy's coronation is the last of the krewe announcement parties until Carnival Week begins with the Crown and Sceptre Ball May 29 at the Hilton Memphis.

Recovery Centers fundraiser

About 120 people attended a fundraiser for Memphis Recovery Centers Friday at Memphis Botanic Garden.

The silent auction included items and services donated by the University of Memphis athletic department and the Memphis Grizzlies.

Event proceeds will go directly toward patient care. Memphis Recovery Centers, a substance addiction treatment facility, provides comprehensive treatment to adolescents, adults and their families.
