Water ice is a good summertime refresher, fruity and light. Take a trip down Winchester and pick up a cup at Parker's Water Ice on Malco Crossing.
Ice cream is great -- it makes us all scream and all that -- but is it really refreshing? It's made with milk and cream, after all. Kind of heavy. But a sorbet or a slush, well, that's something else. And a water ice is something in between.
Parker's Water Ice, tucked away (I'll tell you how to find it) off Winchester, has brought this mostly Northern treat to town.
Water ice might be a bit different from Italian ice, but if so, I'm not sure of the distinction. It's generally made from water, fruit and sugar, but it's churned like ice cream so it's smooth and a little creamy. At Parker's, a family business run by two brothers and one sister, some of the flavors are made with fruit, some with fruit syrups and some with fruit puree.
The strawberry is my favorite -- it's even got small chunks of the fruit in it. The cotton candy, which is definitely made for kids, comes in a close second, though. There are 27 flavors to choose from, so you'll find your favorite too.
It's a little tricky to find. You turn on Malco Way, like you're going to the Majestic theater. Look for Clicks -- Parker's is behind it, facing away from the road.
