Best bets: Sam's Hamburgers & More

It's like a mini food court at Sam's Hamburgers & More on the Mid-America Mall (does anyone call it that anymore?). I have friends who work Downtown and they're always telling me about the two Sam's locations, one they call "hamburger Sam's" and the other they call "pizza Sam's" -- which are just a couple of blocks apart.

We went to pizza Sam's for lunch, where I bought this huge slab of stuffed-crust pizza for $3.99. It was too much to eat, stuffed full of sausage, pepperoni, onions, green pepper and cheese, but I gave it a good try before I gave up.

At pizza Sam's you can also order from the Mexican menu, which includes items such as tacos, burritos and taco salads as well as huge baked potatoes (we tried the one with chicken, cheese, tomatoes and ranch dressing, which was delicious, though a lighter hand with the dressing would've been nice). You can get a burger or a sandwich, and finish it all off with ice cream. Unless you're eating multiple items, you'd have a hard time spending much more than $5.

Sam's Hamburgers & More, 94 N. Main St., 543-9977, is open from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Breakfast is 7-10 a.m.; Mexican food and pizza are available from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and burgers are available 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sam's Hamburgers & More, 3 S. Main, serves burgers, wings and sandwiches from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; call 545-0048.
