The latest addition to the menu at Jerry's Sno Cones is a muffaletta.
I got an e-mail from my cousin on Saturday telling me that Jerry's Sno Cones was serving muffalettas and that we had to go. As if either of us needed another excuse; Jerry's has always been a family favorite. A long-standing tradition for me is to grab a book, run by Jerry's for a large snow cone and patiently endure the line at the White Station vehicle inspection center every June.
A couple of years back, Jerry's started adding new items to the menu and staying open year-round. The muffaletta is the latest addition, and it's both a fine sandwich and a bargain at $6.
Black Forest ham, hard salami, provolone cheese and a house- made olive salad on a fresh sesame seed loaf from La Baguette. Um, what's not to like?
It's not an obscenely large sandwich like you often get when you find a muffaletta, but plenty for two people -- and the olive salad is among the best I've tasted. Owner David Acklin told me he went to popular restaurants in New Orleans and talked to the cooks about their olive salad, then he met an old man who makes it in his home kitchen. That was Acklin's favorite, so the version he serves is a tangy mix of olives, celery, cauliflower, garlic, onion and carrots -- and it is fantastic.
Jerry's is take-out only. You can eat like we did, standing over the trunk of the car and enjoying the sunshine, or you can get your order to go. Either way, you're going to love it. And don't forget the wedding cake snow cone.
Jerry's Sno Cones, 1657 Wells Station, is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call 767-2659 for more information.
