Dance met dinner at Connections: Food, the Ballet Memphis fundraiser, Saturday night at BRIDGES Inc.

For example, guests watched choreographer Nicole Corea's bluesy "Children of the River" while dining on "Rice Krispy Chicken with Tomato Mustard Jam" by chefs Karen Blockman Carrier and Tim Barker. Tim is chef de cuisine of The Beauty Shop Restaurant, one of the Memphis restaurants owned by Karen.

After eating rabbit confit raviolo, sous vide rabbit tenderloin and foie gras torchon by Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman from Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen, saddle of lamb "Vin Cotto" with creole andouille flan and truffled gumbo by Kelly English from Restaurant Iris and before they had slices of lemon blueberry, chocolate and triple coconut cakes and mini-ice cream cones by Jenny Dempsey from Mollie Fontaine Lounge, guests -- who probably couldn't budge at that point -- let the super-energetic dancers in Garrett Ammon's exuberant "Ramble" do the moving around.

The evening's honored guest, Martha Foose, author of the James Beard award-winning cookbook "Screen Doors and Sweet Tea" (Clarkson Potter, $32.50), attended with her husband, Donald Bender, and their son, Joe Joe Bender.

At last year's event, Martha, who was one of the chefs, said she was going to wear a tutu to this year's party. "That was more of a threat than a promise," said Martha, who did wear a tulle petticoat beneath her aubergine taffeta dress.

"There's no such thing as the perfect last meal because we don't want perfect meals to end," Karen told the audience toward the end of the evening. "The perfect meal is one that keeps on going -- the endless moveable feast."

Ballet Memphis artistic director Dorothy Gunther Pugh attended with her husband, Robert. Kate Duignan and Chris Peck hosted the evening.

Burgers for the soul

Guests at Feed the Soul did just that by eating soul burgers from Earnestine & Hazel's and cuisine from other restaurants.

They also fed their souls by listening to Robert Raiford play music and having their photos taken with the deejay resplendent in a cape, and shmoozing with rappers Al Kapone and Sir Vince.

The party, a fundraiser for The Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association, was Thursday night at The Warehouse on G. E. Patterson.

A silent auction featured original artwork by local artists, including MIFA volunteers, current and former staff, clients, MIFA founders and supporters.

Charlie Nelson was chairman.

Delicious town

Food to taste at the ninth annual Taste of the Town ranged from barbecue to crepes.

More than 40 food and beverage venders were featured at the recent event at the Agricenter International.

Judy Gupton was chairman of the event, which also included a live auction to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-South. Pat Register performed.

Awarding 'The Rock'

Greg Costa, president and chief executive officer of Delta Materials Handling, was the recipient of the St. Peter "The Rock" Award at the recent St. Peter Villa 2009 Annual Golf Dinner at Hollywood Casino.

Presenting the award, Kae Werkhoven, administrator of St. Peter Villa, a care facility, said, "All of us know about his commitment to the community."

Joe Birch was emcee of the event. Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton and Bishop J. Terry Steib were among the guests.
