The Memphis Zoo offers made-to-order sandwiches in its new café.
OK, so it’s cold this weekend and you probably won’t be headed to the Memphis Zoo. But a warm day will arrive as unexpectedly as the last snow, and a walk and lunch — yep, lunch — at the zoo might be just what’ll set you right.
Cat House Café has a brand new menu. Chef Penny McCraw, formerly of McEwen’s, The Brushmark and The Westin, is in charge of food service at the zoo and it’s a far cry from burgers (though there’s a decent burger and an excellent black bean burger on the menu).
Salads, pizza, sweet potato fries, chili (and chili cheese fries), and fresh, made-to-order sandwiches are just a few of the goodies in the café. When the season begins, zoo patrons will also find barbecue and noodle bowl concessions along with standards such as snow cones and cotton candy.
And, oh yeah, the sandwiches make Best Bets because they are good. The bread and toppings are fresh and the meat plentiful and tasty.
