In a contest for Best Local Charity Event, a likely nominee would be the annual Oscar Night America Party, a black-tie gala that benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities of Memphis.
This year's ninth annual party -- one of 50 such events officially sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences -- begins at 6 p.m. March 7 (Oscar night) at Minglewood Hall, 1555 Madison. Tickets are $100 each, available at rmhmemphis.org or by calling 312-7479.
Partygoers will watch the Oscar ceremony, hosted by Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, in a private viewing room, on large screens courtesy of WPTY-TV Channel 24 (the local affiliate of ABC, the network broadcasting the Academy Awards). Guests will receive the same official program given out at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, and enjoy gourmet food, champagne, live and silent auctions and live music by the Bar-Kays.
Proceeds will support the Ronald McDonald House, which provides a free "home away from home" for families staying in Memphis while a child receives treatment for cancer or some other illness at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Giggle with the Wiggles
Sam, Jeff, Anthony, Murray, Wags the Dog, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Henry the Octopus and Captain Feathersword will take the stage -- by way of the big screen -- when "The Wiggles: Big Big Show in the Round" screens at 10 a.m. March 20 and 21 at the Malco Paradiso, 584 S. Mendenhall.
The 90-minute concert film was shot in December at a concert in Sydney, Australia, starring the popular children's musical group.
Tickets are $10 each. Go to malco.com and click on the "Malco Special Events" icon.
Crypt-ic scripts
The next meeting of "Scripts from the Crypt," a script-reading group for writers, actors, film fans and others interested in original scripts, is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the crypt at St. Mary's Cathedral, 693 Poplar.
The group is patterned after similar organizations in Los Angeles.
People are invited to bring original scripts; scenes from the scripts will be read aloud in a group setting, as a way for the author to hear "different voices" work with their words, and to receive helpful feedback, according to group organizer Gil Hayes.
The group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. For more information or to submit scripts, e-mail Hayes at zeusjfk@gmail.com.
