"Losers Take All," a film set in Memphis about a fictional, 1980s indie punk-pop band, will begin filming here Aug. 16.
The film, budgeted at $1.5 million, will feature Kyle Gallner of this year's "A Nightmare on Elm Street" remake and will be directed by Alex Steyermark of "Prey for Rock & Roll," and "One Last Thing."
"Memphis fits the story," said independent producer Mike S. Ryan, who worked here on "21 Grams" (2003) and the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winner "Forty Shades of Blue" (2005).
But one of the main reasons for deciding to shoot here was the local crew base. "The crew is energetic and creative, and I always love working in Memphis and this environment," he said.
"Music was a huge part of it," said Linn Sitler of Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission.
Ryan said locations will be at several recording studios, bars and rock clubs, and that a number of local actors had already read for parts. "I'm only bringing three folks from out of state to staff it," he said. Lighting, grip crews, office staff, art, makeup and other jobs will be filled by local and state residents.
The film follows the hard-scrabble lives of an underground band whose sound begins to resonate. Original songs for it were produced by singer-songwriter Marshall Crenshaw and Memphian Scott Bomar and recorded with Memphis musicians at Bomar's Electraphonic Recording studio.
Originally written with a Georgia town in mind, the script was rewritten for its Memphis location, Ryan said.
Other producers will be screenwriters Andrew Pope and Winn Coslick.
