I think the battered vegetable-as-appetizer trend started with fried mushrooms. It’s the first I remember, though I’m not going to get into whether the Hollywood’s fried dill pickles should take precedence — I’m talking widespread snacking here. And onion rings were a side, not really an appetizer.

The list grew until before long we were getting our 5 A Day fried in batter and dipped in ranch dressing all kinds of ways, from cauliflower to zucchini. The latest veggie to pop up on menus is the green bean, and I suspect it’s one that will stay.

Fat Larry’s does a fine job. The beans are crisp — they’re just barely blanched so you can really taste the green beaniness beneath the light batter. And they are the perfect size for finger food.

Fat Larry’s also offers a combo of half green beans and half fried dill pickles, so you can mix it up if you’re so inclined.

Now if they’d just start frying up apples and oranges, we could get all our fruits and veggies in every day, mmm?
