Party Line: A boot scootin' good time

It was more "Cowboy down!" than "Cowboy up!" as riders fell off the mechanical bull at the third annual Stetsons and Stars benefit for the Alzheimer's Association, Mid-South Chapter, on Saturday night at Minglewood Hall. Unlike real rodeo riders, party guests who rode the "bull" fell onto a large blue inflatable cushion.

Instead of tuxes and formals, guests could wear Western attire.

Cory Ewert's boots looked like they were lived in, but, he said, "These are specifically for Stetsons and Stars."

"We had to go out and buy some attire -- hat included," said Mary Newman, who was with Cory.

The party also featured silent and live auctions. Entertainment included music by The Mulch Brothers from Nashville and a performance by rodeo clown Lecile Harris. Shawn and Lana Danko were chairmen. KIX 106's Young & Elder and ABC 24's April Norris were emcees. Lisa Bobal is development director for the Alzheimer's Association, Mid-South chapter.

Merry young souls

MPACT Memphis, a support group for young professionals, honored its own at the Soul of the City Gala Friday night at Central Station. The MPACT Maker Awards were given to young professionals who make a difference.

"Memphis is full of soul, and these awards honor those who are contributing to the soul of the city early in their career," said MPACT Memphis executive director Gwyn Fisher. And, she said, "We honor those who are already making a difference, already building on the soul and helping build Memphis into the city we know it can be."

The party included music by the Daddy Mack Blues Band, cuisine from Crave Catering and old-style prom photos.

Colleen Hitch and Darrell Cobbins were event co-chairmen. Shante K. Avant is board chairman.
