Pie and cake are not everyone's cup of tea, but even folks who don't have a serious sweet tooth usually won't say no to a cookie. And I don't know anyone who would turn down a Makeda's cookie. Lucky for CA staffers — we've been known to dash out on Makeda's runs — there's a new shop in Midtown.

The butter cookie is the one that gets most people swooning; they say it reminds them of the beloved cookie they ate at Memphis City Schools during childhood. I think it's a lot better, as I never ate anything in the school cafeteria that I liked.

Still, it's the double chocolate and the pecan cookies at Makeda's that I really can't resist. The chocolate is the way chocolate was made to be: Deep and dark, and while I don't know the recipe, I feel certain there's some brown sugar in the cookie that adds an extra layer of richness.

The cookie list is long, and you can see it at makedascookies.com. Call ahead to find out if Tamika Heard, the daughter of Makeda's founders Pam and Maurice Hill, has your favorite cookie. The Midtown store is open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m.-9 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday.

Makeda's Midtown is at 1329 Madison; call 726-1515. Other locations are 5729 Raleigh LaGrange (380-5250) and 2370 Airways (745-2667). Cookies are $1.30 each or 5 for $5.50 or 13 (a baker's dozen) for $13.99. Bouquets and trays are also available.
