Performer J. Blackfoot, also known John Colbert, performs at his Downtown recording studio.
The family of late Memphis soul singer J. Blackfoot have announced plans for his memorial services.
A wake for Blackfoot will take place Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 918 Looney Ave. On Saturday, a memorial celebration will be held at 11 a.m. at Christ Missionary Baptist Church, 494 South Parkway E.
A member of the Stax vocal group the Soul Children and a longtime solo artist, the 65-year-old Blackfoot died Wednesday at Methodist Hospital Germantown. He had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.
Born John Colbert in Greenville, Miss., in the late 1960’s, Blackfoot joined with singers Norman West, Anita Lewis and Shelbra Bennett to form the Soul Children. Blackfoot’s earthy vocals would power memorable tracks like “Give ’Em Love,” and the group scored 15 R&B hits during its decade-long run.
Blackfoot is survived by his children Marisa Colbert, Lathoris Colbert Brown, Mario Colbert, Marlita T. Colbert-White, Jasmine Colbert, Jonathan Colbert; his brothers Leedell Colbert , Jerome Colbert, and Willie C. Colbert; his sisters Dorothy Webster, Jeanette Colbert and Vivian Colbert. He was preceded in death by a son, Fablin Williams, who passed away in October, and his wife of 30 years, Allean Ward Colbert, who died in 2010.
