Playhouse on the Square reveals 2012-13 offerings

'Legally Blonde the Musical' kicks things off

Playhouse on the Square has announced its 2012-13 season, which starts next August.

Why so early? "We're about to launch a new website and we just wanted to get it out there," said executive producer Jackie Nichols.

Five musicals and three plays are on deck at the theater, at 66 S. Cooper. "Legally Blonde the Musical" (Aug. 17-Sept. 9) will be directed by Shorey Walker, who last staged "Footloose" and "Hairspray." Lanford Wilson's "Hotl Baltimore" (Sept. 28-Oct. 14), a drama set in a rundown hotel, was last seen at Playhouse in the 1970s.

The kids musical "Annie," an enormous success for the theater this season, will return next Nov. 16-Dec. 30. Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Sunset Boulevard" (Jan. 25-Feb. 17, 2013) will star local stage diva Carla McDonald.

From March 15 to 31, 2013, the theater will run Tony Kushner's "Angels in America," Parts 1 and 2, in repertory. The award-winning pair of three-hour plays about the AIDS epidemic will star actor Jerre Dye (brother of the late "Touched by an Angel" actor John Dye). "Miss Saigon" (May 10-June 2, 2013) and "The Color Purple" (June 21-July 14, 2013) will finish out Playhouse on the Square's season.

The company's sister theater, Circuit Playhouse, has not yet solidified its season.
