Grandson of 'Madeline' creator comes to Memphis with a sequel

John Bemelmans Marciano

John Bemelmans Marciano

The spirited little girl introduced in the classic 1939 children's book "Madeline" has been given new life on the page by John Bemelmans Marciano, grandson of the character's original creator, Ludwig Bemelmans.

Marciano will be at Davis-Kidd at 6 p.m. Thursday to sign "Madeline at the White House," a tale told in rhyme, as were his grandfather's six Madeline stories. Marciano's illustrations resemble those of his grandfather as well.

The new book was inspired by an idea Bemelmans had hoped to develop with his friend Jacqueline Kennedy, when she was a resident of that august white dwelling on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. That story would have been called "Madeline visits Caroline," the name of Jacqueline and President John Kennedy's daughter. (Madeline rhymes with nine.) But Bemelmans died in October 1962, before the project could get under way.

"In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines," begins Bemelmans' beloved first Madeline tale. "In an old white house in Washington, D.C.," begins Marciano's latest addition to Madeline's adventures. The plucky French character visits a lonely little girl named Candle, whose dad is the U.S. President. Sites portrayed in Marciano's drawings include the Oval Office and the Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington memorials.

Line tickets for Marciano's signing come with the purchase of the book.
