In the heart of the city lies a building that is open to all -- all ethnicities, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This building is surrounded by stone, but keeps its doors wide open. This building is home to many, and a place to get away from the chaos some dwell in. This building holds basketball games, a school, a pottery studio, Sunday school classrooms, gymnastics, dancing, but most important are the people it embraces.
Idlewild Presbyterian Church, located at 1750 Union, has a recreation program that reaches out to all in the community.
Two years ago seven AAU boys' basketball players received scholarships to colleges all over the nation. The RBI (Return Baseball to the Inner city) baseball program at Idlewild is striving to make sure all children have a safe place to play during the summer. This is to promote fitness and teamwork.
The soccer program has tripled in size over the past two years due to the devoted coaching and supportive parents that are spreading the word about this wonderful program.
Idlewild's recreation ministry offers events and programs for all ages and levels of fitness.
There is a pottery studio that is open to all in the community. All levels of experience are welcome; there is a teacher to help in different techniques. It is a good chance to learn a new craft or enjoy a night out with the kids.

Ashley LaRue is the director of Recreation Ministry at Idlewild Presbyterian Church.
