The National Endowment for the Arts awarded three Memphis arts groups a total of $80,000 in its second round of grants this year.
ArtsMemphis, the fundraising organization, received $30,000 to put on a series of arts events benefiting underserved communities.
The radio program Beale Street Caravan, broadcast weekly on more than 280 public radio stations, received $10,000 in operating support. Finally, the Center for Southern Folklore was awarded $40,000 for an online archiving project called “Urban Memphis and the Rural Delta: Its Voices, Its Beats.”
The NEA disbursed a total of $1,134,800 to 13 arts groups across Tennessee in this round of funding.
Theatre Memphis adds performances
There’s been a lot of “popular demand” at the Theatre Memphis box office this season. Due to a nearly sold-out run of the current musical “Crazy for You,” a performance has been added on Wednesday, June 22, at 7:30 p.m. The Lohrey Stage seats 400 patrons.
Another show from earlier this season will be revived for six performances on the Next Stage, July 21-30. “(title of show),” a musical about putting on a musical, will feature the original six cast members.
“We knew ‘Crazy for You’ was going to be big, but we were more surprised at ‘(title of show)’,” said Randall Hartzog, Theatre Memphis director of marketing and communications. “Once it took off, it got this kind of cult following and sold out every night. We thought it would be a good one to bring back.”
