ArtsMemphis president and CEO Susan Schadt is the recipient of the 2011 Michael Newton Award for leadership in fundraising for the arts.

In presenting the award, the Washington-based advocacy group Americans for the Arts cited her “visionary approach” to arts management in Memphis.

After taking the job in 2002, Schadt headed up the Memphis for the Arts campaign, which raised more than $20 million. She also spearheaded the rebranding effort that changed the Greater Memphis Arts Council to ArtsMemphis.

ArtsMemphis distributed $4.3 million to local arts organizations in 2010. “I am especially glad that this award shines a national spotlight on the city of Memphis and its thriving, diverse artistic community,” Schadt said after receiving the award in San Diego on Thursday.
