MIM barbecue contest gets underway in new location

Feeling a bit like a springtime Mid-South Fair, the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue got off to a mellow start late Friday afternoon at Tiger Lane.

The Fairgrounds have proven to be a good alternate to the soggy Tom Lee Park. MIM officials say the barbecue teams have adapted to it -- loving the easy load-in and asphalt for one thing. The layout is a grid, with neighborhoods of barbecue clustered together -- ribs, whole hog and shoulder.

The weather is mild and the Ms. Piggie contest is about to start, pitting six teams in their most outrageous costumes to pick up a prize for sheer, porkalicious entertainment.

Thus far, it's been smooth, with easy parking, good attendance and plenty of anticipation of who will take home some trophies.

The contest runs through Saturday when the cooking winners will be announced.
