The Sharp Smokers have a Belgian themed facade.
The second day of the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest got off to a good start, with the first food judging underway, good attendance and a momentary threat of rain never getting past a light sprinkle.
"The crowds are good and we're still getting positive comments," said Diane Hampton, executive vice president of Memphis in May. "A lot of folks have never been to Tiger Lane and it's a great discovery for them."
Tiger Lane is substituting for the drenched Tom Lee Park, but the shift in venue hasn't detracted from the smoke, flavor and party atmosphere around the makeshift city that celebrates the pig.
This is the first day of food judging with competition in coleslaw, hot wings, sauces, baked beans and anything but.
Tonight, the serious cooking gets underway as the teams devote their energies to making the best barbecue they can for Saturday's judging. Awards for the big prizes will be announced Saturday evening.
