Got an old cell phone you've replaced with a newer model? Upgraded your computer and no longer need the old one? Rather than throw away items like that, gather them up and bring them to the public e-cycle (electronic recycling) event being hosted by The Commercial Appeal and the Downtown Memphis Commission on Friday, rain or shine.

There is no limit on the amount of stuff individuals, businesses or organizations can bring. We want to keep as much out of landfills as possible.

Folks can bring old, used, broken or outdated electronics to The Commercial Appeal, 495 Union, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and drop them off in the front parking lot, where they will be recycled by 5Rprocessors -- for free.

Acceptable items include televisions, cell phones, laptops, monitors, gaming consoles, printers, DVD players, VCRs, microwave ovens, stereo equipment, etc. For a complete list of acceptable items, go online to 5Rprocessors.com.

Also, there is no fee for wiping the data clean from computers. There is a fee if the person wants certification of the hard drive cleaning.

Take this opportunity to do a little spring cleaning, and join in the collaborative community event designed to foster the "3R's" -- reduce, reuse and recycle. For more information, call (901) 529-2551.
