The focus in the days ahead is on Madonna the musician.
She's set to perform the halftime show at the Super Bowl on Sunday, and her new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin'," with the white-hot Nicki Minaj, hits radio airwaves this week.
But the 53-year-old superstar is surely hoping that some of that spotlight will shine on her new movie, "W.E.," about the celebrated romance between divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson and Britain's King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne for love in the 1930s.
"To me their lives were so diverse, complex and interesting, and there were so many different points of view to approach the story from," said Madonna during a recent interview about the film, which opens Friday.
Madonna doesn't star in "W.E." -- she's the film's director. It tells the story of Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) through the vantage point of a modern-day woman (played by Abbie Cornish) obsessed with the fabled romance between Simpson and Edward.
Yeoh longed to play Nobel laureate
Michelle Yeoh remembers her pride as a Southeast Asian youth when Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and the actress thinks she's the right person to portray the Myanmar democracy icon.
Suu Kyi "was fighting for democracy in a nonviolent way, where passion was the armor and love for liberty was the weapon," Yeoh told The Associated Press.
"I've been in the business long enough to recognize what an amazing story that she has that we can tell," said Yeoh, 49, a former Miss Malaysia. "If anybody should play her, it's me."
"The Lady," directed by Frenchman Luc Besson, was screened at international film festivals last year and opens in U.S. theaters next month.
Winehouse coroner resigns
The coroner who oversaw the inquest into the death of singer Amy Winehouse has resigned after her qualifications were questioned, her boss said Wednesday -- raising the possibility the investigation may have to be held again.
In October, Suzanne Greenaway ruled that the soul singer, who was found dead at her London home in July, had died from accidental alcohol poisoning.
Greenaway had been appointed an assistant deputy coroner in London in 2009 by her husband, Andrew Reid, the coroner for inner north London. But she resigned in November after authorities learned she had not been a registered U.K. lawyer for five years as required by the rules.
Smithsonian honors Eastwood
The Smithsonian Institution honored Clint Eastwood on Wednesday for his six decades of work in American film, and the actor and director cut the ribbon to open a new movie theater to showcase film history at the National Museum of American History.
