Local artist Pinkney Herbert is celebrating "The Rice Terraces of Cordillera" in this year's fine arts poster for the Memphis in May International Festival.
The 2012 honored country is the Philippines and Herbert's original work, unveiled Thursday, represents the cultural landscape on the island of Luzon that was developed 2,000 years ago. Memphis in May officials said the poster was made from Herbert's oil painting that shows a bird's-eye view of the rice terraces that have been designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
Diane Hampton, executive vice president of Memphis in May, said Herbert was chosen by the fine art selection committee made up of gallery owners and art education institutes around the city. "He has a notable high energy in his paintings and knows how to use vivid colors," she said. "We felt that a country like the Philippines that is so colorful could be captured by him."
Thursday evening's unveiling was held at United Capital Financial Advisors in East Memphis, sponsor of the poster.
Herbert received his BA from Rhodes College and his MFA from the University of Memphis. He has taught for years and exhibited and traveled worldwide. He has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Tennessee Arts Commission and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
The posters will be available unsigned for $30, and also in a limited edition, signed and numbered for $60. They can be purchased in area galleries, frame shops and online at memphisinmay.org.
This year's Memphis in May festival will host the Beale Street Music Festival May 4-6, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest May 17-19 and the Sunset Symphony May 26, all at Tom Lee Park downtown.
