More than 28 musical acts and some 70 films are united in one of the South's most congenial centers of art, entertainment and good food as the Oxford Film Festival and Oxford Music Festival continue. A few highlights include "Patriot Guard Riders," a feature documentary about a motorcycle club that works to block military funerals from the harassing protests of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, and blues-rock performances by Tyler Keith and Jimbo Mathus.

Material Man

There will be a reception at Material for "Confluence," an exhibition of intricate improvised drawings by Morgan Cook, who earned a master of fine arts degree from Memphis College of Art in 2007. The work will be displayed through Feb. 25.

Story Behind the Story

Did you know that the guy who wrote Edith and Archie's "Those Were the Days," the famous sitcom theme song, also composed the Broadway musicals "Annie," "Bye Bye Birdie," and "Applause"? Tonight, Charles Strouse shares the stories behind the hits at a gala fundraiser for the Tennessee Shakespeare Company, at the Germantown Performing Arts Centre. Go for the buffet and reception ($125-$250) or just the show ($25 students, $50 and $75 adults).

V-Day Play

Under the irreverent guise of real-life women discussing their private parts, Eve Ensler's play "The Vagina Monologues" examines the intimate relationship between sexuality and feminism. The annual production at Circuit Playhouse benefits Planned Parenthood.

'Twilight' Time

Presented live via satellite from New York on the big screen, this new Metropolitan Opera production of Wagner's 1876 masterpiece "Götterdämmerung" ("Twilight of the Gods") is a tale of Norse gods and heroes, complete with magic ravens, beautiful Rhinemaidens, fiery effects and a dragon-slaying muscleman, Siegfried.

Oscar! Oscar!

Cartoons are crowd-pleasers — and sometimes they're works of art, too, with appeal for adults and children alike. For proof, see this year's "Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts" program at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. All five of the nominated shorts will be screened, including a 7-minute Pixar film titled "La Luna" and a Louisiana-produced adaptation of the best-selling "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore," co-directed by the book's popular author/illustrator, William Joyce.

Give a Piece of Your Heart

The annual "Works of Heart" art show and auction will fill Memphis College of Art with the heart-inspired works of more than 100 artists. Proceeds from the event benefit the Memphis Child Advocacy Center. The party and silent auction, which include beverages and refreshments, occur from 7 to 10 p.m., but the exhibition is available for viewing today and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $50 in advance, $60 at the door; tickets to the VIP Big Heart Lounge — no waiting in line for drinks! — are $200.

Hip-Hop at the Grille

The Memphis hip-hop community will be out in force tonight at Sky Grille, performing as part of a Memhop Winter Jam concert event. The bill, which features a crew of Bluff City rappers including Knowledge Nick, Fathom9, and the Iron Mic Coalition, among many others, will be hosted by Jason Da Hater and Megan J, and starts at 9 p.m. This is an 18 and over show.

Famed photojournalist and videographer Tony Zumbado, whose work on everything from Katrina to the Casey Anthony case has appeared frequently on NBC and MSNBC, will deliver a talk and participate in a discussion on the topic "From Hurricane Katrina to the War in Gaza: Photojournalism in Disaster and Crisis-Ridden Environments." The globetrotting Zumbabo was the first to make public the desperate conditions at the New Orleans Convention Center, where some 20,000 flood victims were housed, and he also covered the O.J. Simpson trial, the 2011 earthquake in Japan, the Libyan liberation celebrations and the rescue of the Chilean miners.

Phantom Memphis

The Mid-South's first amateur staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" opens Thursday at the University of Memphis. Featuring a cast of students from various disciplines, it's one of the largest productions the theater department has ever staged.
