Title: Bartender at Bardog Tavern
Hometown: Arlington, Texas
How did you get into bartending? I was working at Starbucks on Union and McLean. I'd always wanted to be a bartender. It seemed like a fun thing to do. I love talking to people; I like meeting people. Melissa (Griffin, bartender at Bardog) came through the drive-thru one day. I told her that I would love to bar tend. And she said, "Well, you need to start as a bar back. Let me see what I can do."
What makes a good bartender? Make people feel at ease, make people feel comfortable. Entertain people, talk to them. Yeah, we're serving drinks, but our main goal is to invite people in, make them feel comfortable, have a good time.
What's the best part of being a bartender? I love Memphis to death. We get a lot of people from out of town that are coming in excited about Memphis. Immediately, you get to talk to people about what they've been up to while they're in town, how they're doing, where are they eating, what have they seen, what do they need to see. (I have a) Memphis tattoo. It's an outline of the state of Tennessee with a star over Memphis. It's the first and only tattoo I have. I just love Memphis.
What's popular at your bar right now? We serve a lot of Jameson (Irish whiskey), that's for sure.
What's out of style now at bars? People aren't drinking as much wine or maybe martinis and stuff like that, little fancier cocktails, nicer drinks. We get some happy hour people come in and order stuff like that right out of work, but this place gets pretty rowdy on the weekends. It gets pretty crazy. You get just a lot of beers, a lot of draught beer, a lot of basic cocktails, Jack (Daniels) and Coke.
What's your favorite drink? I like hoppier beers, for sure. Right now my favorite on tap is O'Fallon 5-Day IPA. It's really good. Or Snow Day is also pretty good. (It's) A seasonal New Belgium beer.
What are some of your other interests? I really like anything active and outdoors. I love the sunshine and being outside. I started modeling about 18 years old. Have done lots and lots of stuff locally. I traveled to Italy for a little while, for about a month, modeled over there. Then I went to Sidney, Australia, for about a month.
One of the biggest local things I've done is a shoot here for FUEL bags; made it into GQ magazine, which was pretty cool. It was an advertisement for luggage, so we just had on American Apparel stuff or something like that. I got to make out with a cute girl in the back seat of a Porsche and got to meet Donatella Versace, which was pretty fantastic.
