Who Gets the Blues?
Singer-songwriter Valerie June, a former Memphian who still credits the city for her gritty throwback sound, will make her solo American network television debut with a performance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” Wednesday night.
June, a Humboldt, Tenn., native who lives in New York now but still visits her adopted hometown of Memphis often, on Tuesday released her debut album, Pushin’ Against A Stone, on Concord Records. The record has already been featured on National Public Radio and is a “Pick of the Week” at Starbucks Coffee Company stores around the country.
After her “Late Show” appearance, June leaves for a tour of Europe, where the record was released in June. She is expected to be back in Memphis in November.
Earlier this year June made a surprise appearance on the CBS broadcast of the Academy of Country Music Awards singing backup with Eric Church on his song “Like Jesus Does.” She also starred in episodes of Craig Brewer’s Memphis-set series “$5 Cover” that aired on MTV in 2009.
“The Late Show” is seen locally on WREG-TV Channel 3 at 10:35 p.m.
