Memphis Symphony Orchestra’s 2013-14 season offers a mix heavily reliant on the conventional, but with a few contemporary digressions.
There are the traditional offerings — Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Elvis — and a few newer works, including the lively new “Festivities” by American composer Peter Boyer and Michael Tippett’s 1944 work Five Spirituals from “A Child of our Time.”
MSO music director Mei-Ann Chen, who will be conducting her fourth season with the orchestra, said the blend should have wide appeal. “The programs have been organized to attract everyone from the seasoned symphony-goer to the budding aficionado.”
One of the Pops series concerts will be A Symphony for the Devil: The Music of the Rolling Stones, a touring tribute production that will perform in May 2014.
Local talent is also being featured, with a guest appearance by Joy Brown Wiener performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor in March 2014. Wiener, who was the MSO’s concertmaster for 40 years, first performed the concerto in 1954 with the symphony.
Also, MSO’s principal oboist, Joseph Salvalaggio, will perform Mozart’s Oboe Concerto in March 2014. This October, Lindenwood Christian Church Choir artistic director Gary Beard will be part of the opening Classic Accents chamber presentation “Figaro to Carmen — A Night of Opera.”
Guest artists will be rising violinist Karen Gomyo doing Barber’s Violin Concerto next January, and the Marcus Roberts Trio doing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue this October.
Visiting conductors will be Grant Llewellyn in October and Carl St. Clair in March 2014.
Chen extended her three-year contract last year and will be at the MSO helm at least until the 2015-2016 season.
