Comedian Joe Torry returns to the Mid-South this weekend, appearing Sunday at Harrah’s Tunica Casino’s Funny Bone comedy club (13615 Old Highway 61 North, Tunica Resorts, Miss.).

Torry is best known for starring in such films as 1993’s “Poetic Justice,” in which he played the brutal Chicago opposite Janet Jackson, Regina King and Tupac Shakur, and the 1995 horror anthology “Tales From the Hood.” More recently he appeared in the films “Who’s Watching the Kids” and “Pawn Shop” and will be seen later this month in the Cinemax series “Zane’s The Jump Off” by the best-selling author of erotica.

Torry originally hails from St. Louis, where he was raised in a military household with five siblings.

Torry has said other members of his family were funny, but he was the first one to turn it into a career. After graduating from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., Torry began his stand-up career. In 1992 he first appeared on HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam” and two years later returned as host. He also has appeared on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “1st Amendment Stand Up.” Last year he hosted the inaugural season of “Uptown Comic” on the fledgling digital television network Bounce TV.

Torry’s success in entertainment led him to start the “Giving Back the Love Foundation,” which has mentored more than 30,000 children in his hometown.

“I can’t save the world, but I can try. You can reach young people through entertainment — through fun,” Torry told The Commercial Appeal in 2011. “You adapt to the level of whatever group you are trying to reach. You have to get someone that inspires (them) — someone they idolize.”

Showtime for Torry is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.

Also appearing at the Funny Bone this weekend is comic Tyler Craig. The Atlanta comedy veteran — best known for his tag line “And the moral of the story is ” has appeared on “Def Comedy Jam,” “1st Amendment Stand Up,” and BET’s “Comic View.”

Showtimes for Craig are 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $15 and $20.

Tickets for Funny Bone shows are available at the club and at Call 662-357-4242.
