Theatre Memphis 2013-14 season relies on classics

For fans of classic dramas and musicals, Theatre Memphis’ 2013-14 season will look like a stroll down memory lane.

Even the musical “Young Frankenstein” (on Broadway in 2007), scheduled for October’s Halloween slot, has been in the public mind for decades. Mel Brooks’ adaptation of his own 1974 monster-movie spoof comes complete with the famous green monster dancing to “Puttin’ on the Ritz” in top hats and tails.

“We thought for this next season we wanted character-driven musicals,” said producer Debbie Litch. “This will be a regional theater premiere and great fun for the actors.”

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” and Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” fill out the main stage musicals.

The season opens with the 1927 George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber comedy “The Royal Family,” which parodies the famed Barrymore acting clan. Arthur Miller’s 1949 tragedy “Death of a Salesman” and Mary Chase’s 1944 comedy “Harvey,” about a man with an imaginary friend, will also be seen on the Lohrey Stage.

Beloved Memphis actor Barry Fuller has vowed once more to don Ebenezer Scrooge’s nightcap in the annual “A Christmas Carol.”

The NEXT Stage will feature two contemporary plays, David Auburn’s 2000 Tony winner “Proof,” about the daughter of an esteemed mathematician, and Jeff Talbott’s 2011 play “The Submission,” a drama about a white man who submits a script to a playwriting contest posing as a black woman.

“The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!),” last staged by Theatre Memphis in 2007, returns to spoof the styles of different composers, from Sondheim to Kander & Ebb.

Without a doubt, the most classic work of the season is Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy “As You Like It.”

“All the world’s a stage,” Shakespeare muses — a line almost as famous as Mel Brooks’ mad doctor insisting, “It’s pronounced ‘Fronkensteen.’”

Season subscriptions, which include six tickets for use at any show except “A Christmas Carol,” are $120. Call 901-682-8323.
